Gregg Allman (The Low Country Blues Tour) Usher Hall Edinburgh 06/07/2011

Top Gear have a regular feature ‘A Star in a ‘Reasonably Priced Car’,

to mark tonights gig we get a star at a reasonably priced ticket price (£10 - £25). With Gregg Allman promoting his first solo album for nearly 14 years (Low Country Blues). To mark the event, the UK was rewarded with three very special shows, including tonight’s gig at the recently refurbished (in 2009) Usher Hall, a sumptuous 2,200 seater, usually reserved for the likes of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Everybody who knows, loves and admires the blues should already be familiar with Gregg Allman (if not), he and long departed brother Duane founded the Allman Brothers Band in 1969, Duane’s tragic death and Gregg’s tragic marriages (including the train wreck of his split with Cher), as well as his still coming to terms with recovering from a liver transplant (from a year ago); means you pay for what you get! The authenticity of Gregg and his 8 piece band, with Gregg himself shifting from either is beloved Hammond B3 Organ to Acoustic or Electric Guitar, only helps highlight Gregg’s magnificent laconic storytelling, of meticulously sifted covers by the likes of Jackson Browne's ‘These Days’ to the, I don’t have to tell you again, so ain’t going to, Allman Brothers favorite; Blind Willie McTell's ‘Statesboro Blues’. No ‘Jessica’ tonight (not a mention not a murmur - nobody shouts for it), some memories might be a little too painful, best just to live in the moment and for a few hours in the company of Gregg and his band, to just thank god your still alive and able to revel in some sublime hand crafted blues, at 63 he still sounded like the old Gregg Allman and brother; that’s good enough for me (stunning)!
